COUNSELLING SKILLS FOR NON COUNSELLORS

This is a course for those engaged in a helping or supporting role privately or professionally. The purpose of the course is to offer a framework and some of the skills necessary in helping others - this course does not provide a qualification in counselling.

With sixty years experience in couple counselling Relate is in a prime position to be able to offer Basic Counselling Skills Training to those who wish to use these skills in their work.

We select our Trainers for their interpersonal skills as well as their training ability. Our trainers create an environment where they encourage and enable course participants to join in group discussions and activities. The students are actively involved in the learning process and have full opportunity to taise concerns and practice skills.

Course Content

  • What are counselling skills? The core conditions, a three staged model based on Carkhuff and Egan, fundamentals of the counselling process and use of skills
  • The skills associated with the three stage model
  • Interview management and time keeping
  • The need for clear boundaries and structure
  • Ethical issues, the limitations of the use of counselling skills and the need for support
  • Self-awareness
  • Enabling change

The course provides either one Open College Network credit at level one or one Open College Network credit at level two.
